nutrition girls

It's been almost three months into my dietetic internship, and I am well on my way of becoming a registered dietitian. What frustrates me the most is that you can have all the wonderful research behind nutritional science, yet the outcome would still be as rudely elementary as "eat your vegetable", "limit your fat".

Today I realized that there are three "i" in the word dietitian. Ego.

Types of girls who are drawn to this profession:

1. Health Freaks
By health freaks, I meant those who's heavily under the influence of media and popular science. Most of them are very aware of self image (don't we all...), works out vigorously and follows a regimented diet plan. Usually they believe in low-carb, low-fat, low-caloric diets, or some derivation of fad diets although they'll probably "indulge" on a piece of chocolate, in the attempt to deny that they are health freaks. When organic is available and affordable, they would always go for it. Sugar substitute is good; cholesterol (ie, egg yolk) is enemy; low tolerance to buns/past; whole wheat, or anything brown preferred.

2. Picky Eaters
A friend of mine is ultra picky eater (and I personally suspect that's because she's a genetically super-taster), however, out of things she does consume, she could care less how they taste. I am not surprised that someone with such love-hate relationship with food would enter the dietetic field.

3. Vegetarian / Vegan
It is obvious, when one slashes about half of the food items out there, there is a need to gain more knowledge about it, just for survival purposes.

4. Nursing Rejects
I have never been to the other end, maybe there are MORE dietitian rejects who end up being a nurse, but as far as I can recall, a good portion of the girls were here because "I can't get into the nursing program". Seriously? I guess those dentist/podiatrists are truly medical school rejects then. Geez.
